Why it matters
If the power goes out during a fire, exit signs and emergency lights are what get people safely out of the building -- and a dead battery or burned-out bulb often isn't discovered until it's tested under simulated power loss. Ohio fire code requires documented testing of exit and emergency lighting, typically as part of your regular fire and life-safety inspections.

Common questions
What's the difference between an 'emergency light,' an 'exit sign,' and a 'combo' unit?
An emergency light illuminates a path when power is lost. An exit sign marks the way out but doesn't necessarily light the path. A combo unit does both in a single fixture -- common in newer buildings for that reason.
How long does the battery need to last during the test?
NFPA 101 requires emergency lighting to function for a minimum of 90 minutes on battery power -- we run that full duration test annually, not just a quick push-button check.
What if a unit fails the battery test?
We note it as a deficiency with photos, and provide an estimate to replace the battery or unit. These are usually quick, inexpensive fixes.
